East of Deco: The Forgotten Modernism of Turkish Rugs

When you hear “Turkish rug” your mind might go straight to ornate medallions and ancient tribal motifs. But in the 1930’s a striking current began to ripple through the Turkish design world. While Europe and America were already roaring with sleek geometry, bold contrasts, and modern glamour, a select group of Turkish workshops began weaving their own interpretation of the movement.

A few decades later and we enter… Art Deco, Anatolian style.

AND the glittering, gender-bending, culture-shifting icon… Zeki Müren. During the 1950’s and 60’s Turkey was undergoing its own modernist transformation. Culturally, politically and artistically. One of the most influential figures of this era was Zeki Müren: singer, poet, actor and designer. Müren wasn’t just known for his voice and flamboyant stage presence, he was also deeply involved in design, fashion, and interior aesthetics. His stylized, theatrical sensibility influenced everything from album covers to textiles.

Müren famously collaborated with workshops and designers on home décor pieces in the 60’s and 70’s, promoting a more decorative, glamourous and progressive aesthetic. His personal collection included modernist Turkish rugs featuring bold color blocking, Deco-style glory, and sweeping abstract motifs.

Why we love them? These rugs break from tradition without sacrificing warmth or soul. They pair beautifully with mid-century modern furniture, minimalist spaces, and even boho interiors looking for a jolt of geometry. Nothing comes close.
